Which Dog is Right for me?

Do you have other pets?

GaiaHaving other pets will have an impact on which dog you choose. Getting a Terrier breed whilst you enjoy keeping rabbits and rats for instance is probably not the best idea. Most breeds have been developed for certain qualities. These qualities can be hunting and killing rodents and other ‘pests’.
If you already have a dog in your home you will need to think about getting a dog that will get along with the dog already in the house. Is there a large age difference? Does your dog like to play with other dogs? Do you have male or a female? Does your dog have issues with certain gender or types of dogs? Is sharing attention something your dog can handle? So not only your own wishes play a role here, you need to take your dogs wishes into consideration (even when they can’t tell you in words).

Answering the questions above will help you make a more informed decision in your search for a puppy. Being aware of what will fit into your lifestyle will prevent disappointment when the puppy you chose on looks does not live up to expectations. Taking time to look at what you want from your puppy and what you can offer your puppy is a process that may take a little time but it will help you enjoy your life with your dog that much more. Remember your dog will be with from anywhere between 9 to 15 years!! You want to enjoy those years together.

Puppy training 101 video about Teaching Self Control

RickThis video shows in 5 easy steps how to teach your puppy self control.

Self control around food is an important skill for all dogs. You can teach your puppy this very easily and this video will show you how. Be patient and let your puppy make the decision themselves so they will learn this skill really well. There is no need to verbally warn them or use ‘no’. Let them work it out and make sure they cannot reward themselves.

This is a fun game to play and once the basic skills is learnt you can expand to all sorts of fun challenges for your puppy.

Hope you enjoy this video and teaching your puppy self control. This video was made by Paws4Fun.

Puppy 101 Socialisation & New Surfaces helps develop body awareness and confidence

Rick

This video shows how to teach a young puppy to get used to different surfaces and obstacles. Good for confidence and body awareness. Using a hand target to follow and treats to reinforce.

Puppy Driven at 9 weeks old is being introduced to different surfaces. There are cushions, balance cushions, cardboard, poles on the ground and a platform as well as an umbrella nearby. Getting your puppy used to different surfaces will help him develop his body awareness and confidence and grow into a well adjusted adult.

Using my hand I guide Driven over the surfaces and obstacles. This hand is empty but he does get reinforced and rewarded with food when he moves over the surfaces and obstacles. The sessions are short and filled with plenty of play breaks and delicious treats.

Hope you enjoyed this video and have been inspired to explore together with your pup. This video was made by Sam Turner, Paws4Fun.

Have fun socializing your puppy and exploring with your puppy!

Dog Breeds for kids! Which Dog is Right for me?

Do you have children?

GaiaChildren and dogs seem like the ideal combination. The picture in most peoples minds is that of children and puppies playing happily. Getting a dog just for your children though, is not the best choice. Dogs are not toys and they do not enjoy the kind of interaction a child initiates. Screaming and running children can be very intimidating for dogs. Hugging and pulling on ears are also activities dogs might politely let happen but they will not enjoy it. To keep children and dogs safe they need to be supervised and both should learn the appropriate behaviour to interact with the other individual.
Having children makes it even more important to choose the correct type of dog. Depending on the ages of your children there are some things to look out for.
If your children are very small look for a breed that is not too large or boisterous to prevent your children from being knocked down. Another thing to look out for is the tolerance level of the breed. Some breeds are known to have a much higher tolerance than others where it concerns noise, movement and personal space. A higher tolerance level does not imply they should be treated with less respect! Children should always learn not to jump on dogs or pull at tails and ears.

Breeds that are very protective can make it difficult for your children to have friends  over to visit. Strangers coming in and interfering with their ‘family’ can be an issue. Good socialisation and teaching appropriate behaviour (training!) will prevent these problems. Herding breeds need supervision when children are playing, collies for instance can use your children as sheep they need to regulate. Children running and making noise can trigger unwanted herding behaviour and escalated arousal levels in the dog. Something to be aware of and to manage to stop it from happening and again: training appropriate behaviour.

Other important things to consider with children are to never leave children and dogs unsupervised and to teach children dogs are not toys. Letting children walk the dog should only be done under supervision if at all. Dogs can decide to run after something that moves suddenly and can pull free putting both dog and child in danger. Pay attention to size and temperament of the breeds you are interested in.

Step 2 of the guide: Which Dog is Right for me?

Part 3: How much time can you spend with your dog?

GaiaDogs are social animals and love to be around us. They need quality time with us as well as play time, training time and time for walks. Puppies need extra time as they need to go outside more often and need to learn the ways of our world and your home.
Things to keep in mind are the hours you work. A full time job does not rule out having a dog but you need to be able to provide for your dogs needs when you are not home. One solution is a dog walker to come and take your dog for their much needed walk.

Besides work are there any other hobbies or sports that you enjoy in your spare time? What do you like to do in the evenings and weekends? Can you bring your dog along when you go somewhere?
If you find you are away from home a lot of the time it is important to realise that unless you can take your dog along your life might not be suited for a dog.

Some dogs need more time than others but it is fair to say all dogs want our time and attention. Being a responsible owner means taking the needs of your (future) dog into consideration.

Step 2 of the guide: Which Dog is Right for me?

Part 2: What kind of dog can you afford?

GaiaPurchasing your puppy is not the only cost involved with getting a dog into your home. There are other costs to consider that will continue through the dogs’ lifetime. Think about veterinary care, food, training. Purchasing your puppies daily equipment, water and food bowl, proper collar and lead, identity tag and treats for training is also necessary and can add to the initial cost substantially.

RickHealth is a really important thing to consider when choosing a dog. We obviously all want a happy, healthy puppy. However some breeds do have serious health problems. Being aware of any possible diseases or health issues in a breed you are considering will prevent any nasty surprises. Health care for our pets can become quite costly when there are long-term problems to be dealt with.
There is the possibility of health insurance for dogs. Several companies offer insurance packages. Continue reading
